Scalable web development for a global travel brand
Forest Green Rovers
Recognised by FIFA as the world’s greenest football club
The work
Forest Green Rovers - Widely recognised as the greenest football club in the world. Sustainability sits at the heart of everything they do, from solar panels and renewable energy to vegan catering and carbon removal investment. More than a football club, FGR are constantly pushing the boundaries of environmental responsibility in sport, setting a benchmark for what a modern, conscious club can look like.
Forest Green Rovers
Contentful
FGR’s digital audience includes supporters, sponsors and sustainability minded football fans who want to stay connected to the club’s progress on and off the pitch. This includes match going fans looking for fixtures and updates, as well as a global audience drawn to the club’s environmental leadership.
The website needs to serve multiple purposes. It must provide up to date match information, club news and supporter content, while also showcasing the club’s sustainability initiatives in a clear and accessible way.
We took over an existing Gatsby build that needed updating to support the club’s continued growth. A major version upgrade was required to keep the site aligned with current standards and ensure long term stability. Shortly after, the hosting environment was migrated from Gatsby Cloud to Netlify, creating an opportunity to improve flexibility and streamline deployment processes.
Alongside maintaining and modernising the platform, we worked closely with internal teams to expand the site’s functionality. This included developing new sections such as a dedicated match information area. More recently, we migrated the CMS from Contentful to DatoCMS to better support internal workflows and evolving content needs.
We began by carrying out a major Gatsby upgrade, bringing the codebase up to date and ensuring it was stable and future ready. The migration from Gatsby Cloud to Netlify was carefully managed to maintain performance and uptime, giving the club a more flexible and reliable hosting setup.
Once the foundations were secure, we integrated the website into our internal processes while maintaining alignment with the existing architecture. Over several years, we have worked in close partnership with the FGR team to expand functionality, including delivering the new match information area. The move to DatoCMS has improved content workflows and given the internal team greater control and flexibility.
The continued development of the Forest Green Rovers website has strengthened its role as a central hub for supporters while providing a stable and scalable technical foundation.
1. A More Stable and Future Ready Platform
The major Gatsby upgrade and migration to Netlify have improved reliability and long term maintainability. The site now runs on a modern, supported stack that can evolve alongside the club’s ambitions.
2. A Better Experience for Supporters
Fans benefit from clearer match information, improved structure and responsive performance. The addition of new sections such as the match information area ensures supporters can quickly access the details they need before and after each game.
3. Greater Flexibility for the Internal Team
The migration to DatoCMS has streamlined content management and improved day to day workflows. The FGR team can now manage updates more efficiently while continuing to grow the site in line with both sporting and sustainability initiatives.
